What is the Kayuh Lasak Penang Mountain-bike Jamboree?
It is a recreational event that caters to all levels of mountain-biking enthusiasts from beginners, weekend warriors to hardcore competitors. It is not a race, per se, but more of a personal challenge where you try to overcome your self-imposed physical limits. However, some do race to challenge themselves and others while others take the time to savor the beautiful scenery and take pictures to record their experiences for eternity. The focus however is on Fun, Food and Fellowship.
How much financial damage do I need to incur to enjoy this event?
The main event Kayuh Lasak on Sunday aptly themed “I’m Back” is for individuals and costs a measly RM60/ per person.
A supporting event, Penang Heritage Experience On Wheels (PHEW) on Saturday is for teams of 3-5 persons, is included as part of your RM60/ (per person BUT limited to the first 150 registered participants only) enables you to savor the Treats and Endangered Trades of Penang. Please refer PHEW FAQ if you want to know more!
As always a Grand Jamboree dinner where Penang’s famous local culinary delights will be served. You will also get our event souvenir t-shirt, riding plate, lots of sponsored goodies, an exclusive finisher medal, and the chance to win lots of lucky draw prizes including some really, really awesome bike frames from some of the most sought after brand names in the MTB scene. What more can you ask for!?
Wow, can I still sign up for this event?
If you’re reading this and smiling…then congrats! You’re one of the participants who managed to sign up! But if you didn’t, sorry! You missed the boat again!
Seriously though, we’ll start taking entries from 1st Oct 2009 and closes on 31st Oct 2009 or as soon as the set limit of participants is reached. How many? Cannot tell-lah or I will have to shoot you. Better for you to hurry and send in your entries or agonize on the missed opportunity for another year. Refer to www.kotrt.com.my for details.
Are there any watering stations for me to replenish my water supply?
There will be 1 at foothill of Iron Cross(water only), 1 at Sg Rusa(water and bananas), 1 at Tiger Hill/Summit Rd junction (water and bananas) and 1 at Point 84 (Pg Hill Natural Water & Bananas) and free flow of water, other energy drinks at the finish line.
Last but not least freshly baked Pg Hill Chic Pies awaits the participants who corsses the finish line on a first come first served basis!
How is the trail like? Is it very tough?
The trail gets tougher every year, but the ride gets easier. Ironic, no? Duh!
Really, what’s the trail like??
The trail is designed so that it incorporates all aspects of mountain-biking. There are killer climbs, drops and technical descents, fast downhill single tracks, river crossings, portaging and sections where you will wet your pants (from fear and from pleasure) and others where you will use vocabulary not heard in polite company.
Like that-ah. So what to bring-ah?
HELMET (COMPULSORY!). Be SELF-SUFFICIENT i.e. lotsa drinking water (min 3 litres), gloves and protective gear (optional) and the usual bike accessories like multi-tool, spare tubes and pump. An enduring spirit to overcome the odds, COMMON SENSE to walk the bike when your confidence fails you and your sense of humor to enjoy the trail and the company of your fellow sufferers will help.
Ride hard, ride fast BUT ride SAFE and have FUN! Last but not least remember to smile at the kucimamas on the trail and at the medical aid and feeding stations.
How do I recognize the trail?
The trail will be clearly laid with colored paper, signboards with direction indicators and lots of marshals and traffic controllers. If in doubt, wait up for fellow riders. If none turn up, backtrack till you find a marshal or the paper trail.
