Seafood
Seafood in Penang is a must- have because it is cheap and delicious. There are quite a few places to venture and to eat your hearts out. Ordering seafood is very tricky, you can have it baked, stir-fried with dried chilies or curry powder, steamed, or even raw. However, you must know what to eat. Usually, the big seafood restaurants will have a display of live creatures swimming waiting for a place in your stomachs. These restaurants are found around Bukit Tambun area. Bukit Tambun is the main supplier of seafood to the other seafood restaurants in Penang. So eating at Bukit Tambun is cheaper than elsewhere. Most seafood restaurants serve only seafood and no pork.
Bukit Tambun (Mainland)
There are two restaurants we recommend.
1. How Kee Restaurant
There are two restaurants with same name and of the same owner but different cooks. As you come out of the Bukit Tambun Toll plaza, turn right and head westward. As you come to the first junction, the first How Kee Restaurant is at the left turn of that junction. This restaurant caters mostly to tour groups. The second How Kee restaurant is located after that first junction mentioned. Go straight, and it is the first restaurant opposite The Fish Village Restaurant. It is based in an attap house with dining in the compound. There is a wide array of live seafood to choose from. To make reservations, call Madam Peh at 012-5353606. The chef at the second How Kee Restaurant is better than the first one. Signature dish is the Black Tip Shark with its liver; steamed or curry stir-fried. Credit cards not accepted. Open from 10am to 10pm daily.
2. Gee Seng Restaurant
This is also one of the better restaurants with a good chef. It is located towards the end of the road where the jetty to Pulau Aman is located. Turn right after the Bukit Tambun toll plaza and go straight towards the end. Number to call for reservations is 04-588 7220. we would recommend you try different dishes every time you go there. The food there is excellent. Credit cards not accepted. Open from 3pm to 10pm daily.
3. The others
Of course there are other restaurants over at Bukit Tambun or nearby in Batu Kawan. There are The Fish Village Restaurant, The Prawn Village, The Floating Restaurant, The Jetty Restaurant and many others.
Note – Estimated at about RM10-RM20 per person in a group of ten for 6-8 dishes depending on platter size and alcoholic drinks. All of the restaurants in Bukit Tambun do not serve pork. Teluk Bahang (Penang Island)
Pang's Seafood Restaurant
This is a small seafood joint at Teluk Bahang. Go straight from Batu Feringghi town and you will come to Teluk Bahang Town. At the roundabout, turn right and go straight. At the end of the road, take a left turn and drive down 100 meters. Pang's Seafood Restaurant is on your right. Specialties here are the Belacan Chicken and Squid, both fried in curry. No pork served. It closes on Tuesdays. (Will update with telephone no for reservations)
Paya Terubong (Penang Island)
Paya Terubong Seafood Restaurant
This restaurant serves good food. Its specialty is fish cooked in different styles. Make your way to Air Itam, pass through the market place and then head on to Paya Terubong. You will come to a set of traffic lights, go straight. After a left bend, there are a few blocks of shop-houses on your left; there is a big signboard of the restaurant. It is opposite the Juvenile Facilities for girls. No pork served. (Will update with telephone no for reservations)
Batu Maung (Penang Island)
1. Teluk Tempoyak Seafood Food Court
This is a Malay seafood food court serving Ikan and Ketam Bakar, sotong goreng and kerang. Very nicely cooked and served in Malay flavored styles. Go onto the Jelutong/Bayan Lepas Expressway and make your way southbound until you reach the last set of traffic lights. Go straight and after 500m, there will be a sign to turn left onto the road to Teluk Tempoyak. Make your way up the hill and down towards the bay. Parking is next to the food court. Eat your hearts out. It is closed on Tuesdays.
2. Zinee Cuisine
This is another Malay seafood restaurant located in Batu Maung. Their specialty curry fish head and pandan chicken (you need to make 24hrs reservation for pandan chicken and it's worth it!). Go onto the Jelutong Expressway and make your way southbound until you reach the last set of traffic lights. Turn left and take immediately, drive towards LKIM jetty canteen. Look to your right. You can contact En Jamaludin 04-626 1773 or 012-408 2347.
3 . The others
Yes there are other restaurants in Batu Maung too. we do not know the names but we will reedit and with more news. Go onto the Jelutong Expressway and make your way southbound until you reach the last set of traffic lights. Turn left and make your way uphill. There are a few seafood restaurants there.
Note: Seafood on the Island is slightly more expensive than what you get in Bukit Tambun. With no alcoholic drinks, per person is about RM20-RM30 in a table of ten with 6-8 dishes.
