Penang Heritage Experience on Wheels - overview
The idea of the “Saturday Event” was first mooted in the preliminary plans for Jamboree 2004. The objectives were:
1) To make the Jamboree more enjoyable for non-hardcore riders and their families
2) To support the state's Sports Tourism Promotion Campaign; and
3) To highlight Penang’s heritage attractions.
Past years’ themes for the Saturday Event focused on a cycle hunt in search of Penang food and heritage attractions, attracting 100-plus riders to take part in this one-of-a-kind event, year after year. This year, our 5th time to host such an event, we will continue on the same concept of Cycle Hunt but with a new peel to the game.
PHEW 2009– Saturday, 5th December 2009
This year’s cycle hunt will take participants through the streets of Georgetown revisiting more heritage sites. Unlike the past year’s event, this year’s will be based on a ‘Hunt & Locate’ concept ala ‘Amazing Race’. Participants will be grouped into teams of 3 to 5 riders subject to a limit of 150 individual entries. Each team will need to carry a mystery item, a map and a passport throughout the race. Failure to carry any one of these will result in the team’s disqualification (or penalty in timing and points???). In each passport, there are a set of questions which the teams need to get the answers from the specific locations. Teams will need to study the questions, found in the passport, to get the clues to the correct answers. All answers will need to be filled into the passport by the teams. After answering the questions at each location, the teams need to get their passport stamped for validation. Each location represents one checkpoint. The map is a guide to these places. There will be two marshals based at each checkpoint for the stamping of the passports. Teams that complete the race must turn in their map, passport and mystery item to the finish-line marshals for judging.
There is a cut-off time – all teams need to check-in by 12.00pm at Youth Park’s field. After that, teams will be disqualified from the race.
The winner of this hunt is the first team that submits the first correct entry at the earliest time.
The results will be announced on Sunday night, 6th December, at the MTB Jamboree grand dinner.
There will be lunch served at the Youth Park open air theatre for Saturday’s participants.
